Nurturing Our Planet: Aboitiz Construction’s Environmental Commitment

At Aboitiz Construction, our commitment to sustainability starts with a deep respect for the environment. We believe that every project we undertake has the potential to contribute positively to the environment around us. By integrating eco-friendly practices into our operations, we strive to minimize our ecological footprint and promote a healthier planet. From empowering our team members to participate in environment-related activities to complying with environmental laws and standards, we are dedicated to creating structures that not only meet the needs of today but also contribute towards environmental sustainability. Together, we can build a better future while safeguarding the environment we value.

Our Efforts in Waste Management

Aboitiz Construction is dedicated to implementing effective waste management as part of its sustainability agenda. Through waste segregation, recycling initiatives, and the responsible disposal of hazardous materials, the company minimizes its environmental footprint. These practices are embedded in all project phases, reflecting Aboitiz Construction’s commitment to reducing waste and promoting environmental responsibility across its operations.

Effluents and Waste Management

Water Consumption

In 2023, Aboitiz Construction saw a notable rise in water consumption compared to 2022, primarily due to the increased activity in larger-scale projects like the LIMA developments. In contrast, water usage in 2022 was lower, reflecting the reduced number of project operations during that period. responsible future.

Eco-Friendly Initiatives

eWaste Management

We placed eWaste Boxes for the hauling and recycling of electronic, electrical, and IT waste that are considered hazardous. This initiative not only promotes responsible disposal but also helps protect the environment by ensuring that harmful materials are processed safely and efficiently.

ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System Certification

Our ISO 14001 certification enhances the company’s environmental performance and compliance, promotes cost savings, and strengthens our commitment to sustainability. It also provides a competitive edge in bids and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

Use of MRF

One of our key eco-friendly initiatives is the implementation of Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) on project sites. These facilities are designed to effectively manage and segregate waste, ensuring that reusable and recyclable materials are properly sorted and diverted from landfills. By utilizing MRFs, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also contribute to resource conservation.

In addition, we are advancing our efforts through an ongoing project called RoamCycle, which aims to revolutionize waste management with the introduction of portable MRFs. RoamCycle will provide a standardized waste staging and sorting facility for ACI projects, offering an innovative solution to transition from the conventional “build and destroy” approach to a more sustainable and transferable system.

Policy on Single-Use Plastics

One of the company’s commitments is to contribute to effective waste management. With the implementation of the policy against single-use plastic across all project sites, we are optimistic to uphold our environmental sustainability mindset and social responsibility.

Emissions

Aboitiz Construction Inc. (ACI) monitors its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through three categories: Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3.

Scope 1: Direct Emissions

This scope accounts for about 5,402.38 tons of direct GHG emissions from ACI’s own operation. These came from:

  • Fuel consumption in company vehicles and machinery.
  • Generator use in corporate offices.
  • Oil consumption for equipment and operational needs.

These emissions are directly produced by fuel combustion during operations.

Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Energy Use

The second scope has a total of 523.05 tons, resulting from electricity purchased for ACI’s corporate offices and project sites. Additionally, emissions come from the transportation of ACI’s orders by suppliers, whose vehicles release GHGs during delivery. While ACI does not directly control these emissions, they contribute to the overall carbon footprint.

Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions

This scope accounts for about 165.79 tons and include activities not directly controlled by ACI, such as:

  • Business travel, including air transportation.
  • Solid waste disposal, where waste breakdown generates methane and other GHGs.

Through this breakdown, ACI can better address its carbon footprint by targeting energy efficiency, optimizing fuel usage, and improving waste and supplier management practices.

Tree Planting Activities

Coastal Cleanups

With rapid societal development, industrialization has increasingly impacted the environment. In response, Aboitiz Construction remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainability through initiatives such as tree planting and coastal clean-ups. Aligned with our goal of building a better future, we contribute to environmental preservation through these meaningful actions.

Our major tree planting initiative is carried out in partnership with the Mt. Malaraya Environment Protection Council Inc. through the National Power Corporation’s Carbon Sequestration Initiative. The planting site is located in Santo Tomas City, Batangas, where the trees improve air quality, provide oxygen, and enrich the environment, benefiting both nature and the people who depend on it.

Additionally, our coastal clean-ups, often organized in collaboration with local government units and the West Cebu Estate in Balamban, Cebu, help reduce pollution in oceans and waterways, supporting the health of marine ecosystems. These activities also foster camaraderie within the Aboitiz community, encouraging teamwork and collaboration as we work together towards a sustainable future.

Environmental Compliance

In 2023, Aboitiz Construction achieved 100% compliance with environmental regulations, with zero environmental-related non-conformities (NCs) reported. This demonstrates our unwavering commitment to sustainability and adherence to the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System standards. Through diligent monitoring and strict enforcement of environmental policies across our operations, we continue to minimize our environmental impact while ensuring that our practices align with international benchmarks for environmental responsibility.
